Artistry. Originality. Diversity. Quality. In 2014, Nonesuch Records celebrated its 50th anniversary, a landmark in the history of a label whose eclectic, award-winning roster today ranges from The Black Keys to Kronos Quartet, Emmylou Harris to John Adams, Brad Mehldau to Randy Newman, Chris Thile to Rhiannon Giddens, Steve Reich to Robert Plant, Caetano Veloso to Audra McDonald. Founded as a budget classical label in 1964 by Jac Holzman, head of the then-independent Elektra Records, and overseen by Bob Hurwitz for the past three decades, Nonesuch Records pursues a broad mission that embraces world music, classical, jazz, folk, rock, bluegrass, Americana, musical theater, soundtracks, and often the uncategorizable.
