Trent Tappe & Maryrose Maness Each Upped to Deputy General Counsel at Warner Music Group

Longstanding Warner Music Group (WMG) executives, Trent Tappe and Maryrose Maness, have each been promoted to the role of Deputy General Counsel for the company. The announcement was made today by WMG EVP & General Counsel, Paul Robinson, to whom they both report. Tappe, who has been with WMG for 14 years, was named SVP, Deputy General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer. Maness, who marks her tenth anniversary with WMG this year, was named SVP, Deputy General Counsel. Both Tappe and Maness were named to Billboard’s prestigious Top Music Lawyers list in 2017 and 2018.

“Trent and Maryrose are two of the most astute and insightful legal minds it has been my pleasure to work with,” said Paul Robinson. “Their tenure at WMG has coincided with a time of major transformation in our company and throughout our industry. They have done exceptional jobs in navigating complex and often uncharted territory. In addition, they’re both huge music fans, which gives them a real passion for our artists, our songwriters, and the creativity that drives our business. Trent and Maryrose are skilled at delivering positive outcomes that are not only compliant with law and contract, but are also fair. I am very pleased to announce these richly deserved promotions.”

Tappe was most recently SVP, Chief Corporate Governance and Securities Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer. He and his team support a broad range of areas, including WMG’s corporate governance and board of director functions, SEC reporting and capital markets transactions, the company’s compliance program, and corporate M&A. During his tenure, Tappe has participated in many of WMG’s most game-changing corporate transactions, including its initial public offering in 2005, its acquisition by Access Industries in 2011, and its purchase of Parlophone Label Group in 2013. He has also spearheaded efforts to optimize the company’s capital structure through a series of bank and other capital markets debt financing transactions.

Maness was previously SVP, Chief Employment & Corporate Infrastructure Counsel. She oversees multiple practice areas, including employment, privacy, records management, and trademarks and domain names. She serves as chief counsel and advisor on employee relations, wage and hour, disability, affirmative actions, OSHA, immigration, and benefits matters. Most recently, Maness was a leader in efforts to ensure that WMG is in compliance with new European data-privacy rules, which embrace data relating to employees, artists, songwriters, and consumers.

Prior to joining WMG, Tappe spent eight years as an Associate in the Capital Markets group of Shearman & Sterling LLP in New York. He was previously with PricewaterhouseCoopers for three years in Detroit. Tappe holds a J.D. degree from Columbia Law School, as well as both a B.B.A. and Master of Accounting degrees from the University of Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

Before joining WMG in 2008, Maness was Senior Assistant General Counsel at Altria Client Services for 12 years, prior to which she served as Chief Labor and Employment Counsel at Melville Corporation for two years. Maness started her career at Grotta, Glassman & Hoffman, a boutique labor and employment firm now known as Fox Rothschild, followed by a six-year stint with Philips Electronics. She is a graduate of Seton Hall School of Law.
