Elva was born in Taiwan, and was studying in Canada when she was discovered at the Vancouver audition of the New Talent Singing Awards Competition, organized by Hong Kong television broadcaster TVB. She shot to immediate fame after the release of her debut album, which sold nearly a million copies and became Taiwan’s best-selling album in 1999.
