2017 WMG Grammy Nominations

December 6, 2016

Today, the Recording Academy announced the nominations for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. Warner Music Group artists and songwriters had a tremendous showing this year, across an impressive range of genres and from artists at all stages of career development. Here are a few highlights:

– FBR/Atlantic’s twenty one pilots earned five nominations, including Record of the Year for “Stressed Out,” while WBR’s Lukas Graham nailed three noms for “7 Years,” including both Record and Song of the Year. Besides being WMG recording artists, both twenty one pilots and Lukas Graham are Warner/Chappell songwriters.

– WCM songwriter Beyoncé is the most-nominated artist this year, with a remarkable nine nods — bringing her career total to an amazing 62 nominations — including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that her nominated song, “Formation,” is the first Beyoncé song to be penned 100% by WCM songwriters. Right behind Beyoncé in the tally is WCM’s Rihanna, with eight noms.

– Sturgill Simpson scored a major coup with both Album of the Year and Best Country Album nominations for A Sailor’s Guide To Earth, while other WMG recording artists with two nominations each include Brandy Clark, Gojira, and Nonesuch’s Rhiannon Giddens and Brad Mehldau.

– The Suicide Squad album yielded five nominations — for Best Compilation Soundtrack, plus three noms for twenty one pilots’ “Heathens” and one for the Skrillex/Rick Ross collaboration, “Purple Lamborghini.”

– All told, Warner/Chappell notched 17 nods across all nine songwriting categories.

– In addition, our independent services arm, ADA, landed a fantastic 28 nominations across an incredible span of music. Highlights include a nod for Blink-182, via our new partnership with BMG, plus nominations for the likes of Bon Iver and Metallica.

– Finally, our international companies were well represented this year, including nominations for Warner Music Mexico, Warner Music Italy, and Warner Music France.
